Someone has been reading too much Heinlein, methinks

From the BNP manifesto:

7. The compulsory National Service system discussed elsewhere in this Manifesto
would begin at the age of 18 with a period of basic training in the army. This
would include full training with the citizens’ assault rifle. Conscientious objectors
who refuse to undertake military service would be allocated other constructive
work for the community, but would not receive the citizen’s right to be armed, or
the right to vote.

Did someone mention Starship Troopers?

I remain convinced that, if only they were able to look less thuggish, and toned down their racism to, say, roughly Conservative levels, they could form an alliance with the Green Party and go far. The BNP manifesto is full of anti-EU, anti globalist and, in some sense, green rhetoric. My only concern is that my experience of the Greens (and I belonged to the Green Party and the Ecology Party for a couple of periods and even went to a party conference many many years ago) is that they have a profound authoritarian, anti-democratic streak that might be too much even for the BNP.

It also has to be admitted that the Green Party don't mention compulsory ownership of assault rifles in their manifesto. Although, now I come to think of it, I distinctly recall people in the party suggesting that we should adopt this sort of 'citizen's militia' model for defence. It is a not uncommon view amongst the vaguely anarchic but non pacifist.
