Al Jazeera has gone free to air on satellite (somewhere in the deepest 800s), i.e. can be watched without a subscription, which is something we have never had. Obviously it is in Arabic (though they are launching an English language channel next year), but TV news is often interesting even if you can't understand it, because you can still see the sort of thing they cover, how they cover it, who they interview, the dynamic between the presenters, what they wear etc. etc.

In fact I used to amuse myself by recording the news and then watching it on the video in fast forward mode, which reduces things to the basics of 'git in suit looks solemn', 'two gits in suits gesticulate wildly at each other' etc. which is often all you need to know :-)
