Whiffy

Being, as we are, in the last redoubt of the technocratic hinterlands of the South East (on a clear day you can still feel the glow of the white heat of technology) we are overrun by WiFi networks.
Our router is downstairs but vexingly (only ROT13 away from irksomely) the MagicBox internet radio is a bit more picky and sometimes can't find out network when the EEE in the same location can. I have not worked out any pattern for the behaviour. I am on channel 1, as is another. Most are on channel 6 with one on 5. I have a vague suspicion that
a) at least one isn't left on all the time
b) I haven't kept a list but it is possible that two of us are chasing each other between channels 1 and 11

Clearly we are not going to all go all Doctorow and form a mesh network, so
i) does anyone have any tips for working out why the MagicBox sometimes finds other networks but not ours
ii) is there any merit for trying channels between 1 and 6 or 6 and 11. I am aware that they are non overlapping, but does it do any good or would it merely be pissing in the pot of those using 1, 6 and 11?
