"It was while serving as a curate at St Mary's, Cadogan Gardens, that he met Duncan Grant.

It was July 1946 and both men were crossing the road at Piccadilly Circus. A casual remark led to further exchange and the rest of the evening was spent drinking rum and looking at pictures in a house in Bedford Square, where Grant had a pied-à-terre.
