The European classical music lake

For some reason I knew that the music played on Radio 3 overnight (from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m.) is made up of music provided by EBU members. What I didn't realise is that the show is essentially produced by the BBC for the EBU  under the name 'Euroclassic Notturno' http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/euroclassicnotturno/ i.e. the BBC produce the music and schedules and the individual radio stations can voice-track the announcements. The jingle they play at 1 a.m. which means 'you really ought to be asleep by now' does seem to be the theme of the show. The name is a particularly fine bit of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europanto (*) and it seems a fine European endeavour.

(*) at one point I used to read a mailing list or something about linguistics. Every now and then someone would post something about Europanto and would be shot down in flames by people who thought the joke wasn't funny or wasn't funny any more. You really have to read the Wikipedia talk page as the article is a good example of the Wikipedia page which whilst not factually inaccurate somehow manages to almost completely miss the point. The 'inventor' comments on the talk page himself saying 'Speaking English we take possession of it, we make it a language of our own, we pollute it with our way of thinking, our vision of reality, our national character', which I think is as good a manifesto for the English language as any.
