The 'better living through being a sociopath' book that was getting reviews and buzz a few months ago recommended that one stop reading / watching the news on the basis that if anything actually important happens that you'll hear about it from friends / colleagues. I tend to view it as a failure on the part of my LJ friends and blogs I follow via RSS if I have to hear anything by actual news, however clearly there is a certain class of celebrity story that doesn't get picked up on.
