Youth of today

Where did people get the idea that you're not supposed to use meaningful strings as primary keys in SQL databases, but have pointless internally generated IDs?

Microsoft, Mobile, Mapping, Mascarpone...

On a mailing list relating to a word beginning with g and rhyming with beaks in a city known for its dreaming spires (see how I am deliberately phrasing things to avoid drive-by commenting due to search engines finding this), there is a reference to there being an OXMUG as well as an OXLUG. Now, my guesses for what the M stood for were Microsoft, mapping or mobile. The real 'M' is probably obvious to you but for some reason it didn't occur to me. It would be vaguely tempted to set up an OXMUG as in Microsoft just to piss people off.
Also, I have to say that the pursuits of the 'begins with g and rhymes with beaks' don't seem what I would consider very ****y. More what used to be called 'new media' back when it was, er, new. Perhaps we need a campaign for real ****yness. Things involving robots, flame-throwers, quantum computers, home brew scanning tunnelling microscopes etc....
