You'll have to speak up, I'm a trifle deaf, boom boom

Went to the ENT clinic at the hospital. The doctor took a history (she hadn't had the results of either of the swabs the GP did), used the infamous 'ear hoover' which is a rather weird experience, then filled my left ear with yellow gunge held in place with a bit of cotton wool. I have got to try and keep it in there, she said that some should still be visible to her after 5 weeks, and that I should keep it bunged with cotton wool for a week to ten days.
I suspect that this is either a bizarre practical joke on her behalf or a way of ensuring that I keep the ear properly dry (with cotton wool and vaseline).
