Walking down Friar's Entry, two young women sitting outside the coffee shop that has appeared more or less opposite Far From The Madding Crowd.
One to the other, in RP accent, slightly shrill, intonation about what you would expect:

"I don't understand; how can you not be passionate about it?"

About what, of course, we will never know.

Also, down New Inn Hall Street two young people collecting money: 'help the deaf in Tanzania'. Amid all the other people protesting and/or collecting (lots of people in Cornmarket protesting about the Israel 'Defence' Wall) these two had picked the least glamorous so I put a pound in their tin. 'Would you like to buy a raffle ticket?' she asked. 'You can have one anyway as you put a pound in.'
'No thanks', I said, 'but you can have another pound'.
So many obscure causes that on the whole no-one gives a fuck about...

Christmas shopping seems to have started already, the Westgate Centre car-park and Oxford seemed distinctly more busy at 10:30 a.m. than normal.
